About

My name is Christy and these are some things I'd like for you to know about me.

My husband, Daniel, drew this for me one day when we were imagining potential tattoos for each other.

If you can't tell, it's a glasses-wearing cat writing in her journal which is being propped up by a hedgehog. Obviously there is a lot to interpret here, but from what I gather, I'm the cat? Maybe he's the hedgehog? I don't actually think he's the hedgehog. Maybe the hedgehog refers to my ability to utilize all things at my disposal? I'm not sure, but all I know is that --

1) I'm transfixed by this picture, and
2) It will never make its way onto any part of my body.

Like that cat up there, I like to write and I also wear glasses. Those things are true. While the cat is naked, I am often not. I tuck my shirts into my skirts and my pants into my riding boots and I wear some kind of bold statement necklace just to jazz it up. This is what I look like.

That's a really good picture of me. This is a not-so-great picture of me.

This is the best picture anyone has ever taken of any human ever.

Two years ago, I moved from Austin, Texas to Brooklyn, New York with my husband, Daniel. We are both young, in love, and we have a cat named Frasier.

Anyway, I should probably cut to the chase about what this blog is and why you are even here. You are probably here because Pinterest told you to come here, but now after seeing that cat tattoo, you are a little bit intrigued. And you should be.

This blog, Avoiding Atrophy, is about exactly what its name implies -- keeping yourself from becoming a lifeless pile of mush. To many of you, that might sound incredibly simple. Good for you. You probably always look great in pictures.

But for the rest of us -- those whose minds race, those who have huge dreams and no idea how to fulfill them, those who always regretted taking gymnastics instead of volleyball, those who love themselves on Monday and want to go on a break from themselves on Thursday -- we've got to find a way to keep it together and get the very best things out of this gift that is life.

That's where I come in. I'm a lot like you. I sweat when I don't want to and I forget friends' birthdays. My bangs will never stay in place no matter how they are cut, and I can't figure out how to do a sock bun.

But what I can do is write. I'm very good at it. I'm sure you are also very good at something wonderful.

So what I'm going to do is write down my experiences, my struggles, and my thoughts on living exactly as I am. Sometimes this will come in the form of wedding advice (because I had a wedding), my thoughts on marriage (because I have a marriage), or ramblings about living in the best city in the world (because I presently live in the best city in the world). Other times it will be me pleading for someone to teach me how to properly do a fishtail braid (I still have no idea).

Either way, stick with me, kid. We'll figure out how to avoid atrophy together.

  2. Just came across your blog and love it. I'm newly Christian, a writer/editor, about to move across the country to be closer to my boyfriend, and have been freaking out about getting married young (at least younger than I thought I'd be). Thanks for the encouraging words. Tons of e-love to you and your husband, you guys are adorable together. :)

  3. Hello, Christy. It's nice to meet you. My name is also Christy:)
So I found you from Pinterest with the wedding do-over posts. Very amusing and intriguing and something to keep track of if I ever get married.
Also, fishtail braids completely mystify and astound me. HOW do they do that? I'm going to follow your blog and Pinterest and see if you ever figure that out so you can do a step by step diagram and show me.

P.S Is it just me or is it very cool when you meet other people who have the same name as you, and then you kinda start comparing yourself like it's a competition?

    1. Hi, Christy! I can't quite say I have the experience of comparing myself to people named Christy, but that's usually because the only one I can think of is Christy Turlington, and I think she's probably the clear winner. And sadly, I will never understand fishtail braids. It's a sad truth that I have come to accept.

  4. Hi Christy,
I ran across your blog awhile back via a FB post Daniel put up (we went to school together back in the day) and I look forward to every post! I was wondering if you have previously written or would take a request to write a how-to post on how to make your blog pretty. Mine just follows the basics and while simple is nice, it just lacks personality.

    Thanks!
    Shae S.

  8. I just came across your blog, and yes Pinterest told me. I must say that I just fell in love with your blog, especially your about me page. The way in which you describe "The rest of us..." just squished my heart like mush and made me tear up for a moment. I love it when I find bloggers whose writing brings up my emotions. When I grow up, I want to be like you. ;-)

  10. Ok. Oh my gosh. I am so excited. I just discovered you!!!! I think we should be best friends but I guess you already have Fraiser so I'll settle for being your biggest fan.

I don't even know what astrophy is but I'm excited to avoid it with you. I'll be here... watching... waiting... creeping... for more posts. Because I'm obsessed now. How do I make my blog as cool as yours? All the buttons and stuff are so high-tech.

I also just followed you on everything. Am I coming on too strong? I'm coming on too strong.
