I Painted a Dresser and Now I Regret It, Maybe?

Guys, remember how stoked I was yesterday about the fact that I was finally doing a DIY project? I felt so energized by the fact that I wasn't just sitting on my laurels, waiting for things from Pinterest to appear in my apartment. I was making change happen!

If you don't know much about me, you should know that I rarely DIY anything and I feel like people who do are easily the most put-together human beings on the planet.

So in attempt to look and feel more like them, I decided to paint a dresser which was recently donated to us by a friend who will soon be moving across the country.

I told you guys I'd post pictures, but honestly, I'm not sure I love it.

We were trying to go for an ombre gradient kind of thing like this:

We ended up with this:

Merp...

I don't know...I just feel like it looks a little sad. I'm a huge fan of color, but Daniel convinced me that using neutral colors would make it easier to blend with our room and take into a new space if we ever move.

He's probably right...I guess, but I don't know.

It just feels like it needs some razzle.
Maybe a dash of dazzle.
Maybe a careful combination of the two, I don't know.

I put some stuff on it to help make it a little bit cheerier.

And in a way, I sort of like it.

Here's the before and after:

But I just can't decide.

Part of me wants to fix it somehow.
I feel like the concept is there, but it just needs a little something.

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm thinking of somehow adding just a pop of color somewhere or a stencil or something.
I don't know, what do you think?

Also, feel free to tell me if I'm just being crazy, and it's actually the most exquisite piece of furniture you've ever seen in your life. By all means, tell me if you had a strong emotional reaction wherein you began weeping with joy the moment you laid eyes on it.

Though I strongly doubt you did.

  1. I think it looks awesome! If you want just a little pit of dazzle, maybe add just a faint line of glitter where the drawers are indented (I realize you have to make it for BOTH of you, but a little bit of glitter never hurt anyone) or do a little corner scroll (excuse my terminology) in the top left corner on the first drawer and the bottom right corner on the last drawer.

    1. Ooo! I love me some glitter. I had thought to put a pop of color (maybe yellow?) where the drawers sit. It would look like small piping around the drawers. Maybe I'll do glitter instead!

      Thanks for the suggestion!

  3. I actually don't see what's wrong with it. Maybe you are just thrown off by the fact that the style is so different from your inspiration dresser? Anyway, I like it and it seems like you guys (Daniel) did a great job. Maybe if you add more color/decoration to the wall that will remedy the way you feel about it? I need to send you that giant map I originally offered—that could help.

Also, is that the globe in its new home?

    1. You're totally right. I think that's what it was. And I would totally go nuts for that giant map! Also, no, the globe still wants to be a lamp. We just have to get a good chord and figure it out. Don't worry, I've already moved it to another impractical place.

  4. I think it looks great! The difference I see between the finished product and the inspiration is the main body of the dresser. In the inspiration, the main body is the lightest shade (the top drawer shade), and in your DIY wonderfulness it is the darkest color (bottom drawer) that covers the rest of the piece. Do you think making yours the lighter-color overall would give you the warm fuzzies of the inspiration? Not sure... just my two cents.

    1. Yeah, I really think that's what it is. I'm starting to get those fuzzies the more I look at it, but I think the dark grey does make it look a little file cabinety. I'm going to sit with it for a week and then see how I feel. Thanks for weighing in! I totally trust your judgement.

    2. Yeah I was thinking the same thing. The main body should be the lightest color.

    1. Glad to hear it! This makes me feel better for sure.

  6. I can see why you would get "file cabinety" because of the dark grey outline. But, I still really like it! I also like your idea of using a stencil and putting something on there but maybe something less permanent like a decall could work? That way yo ucan take it off if it no longer goes with your decor? I dunno! Just my two cents. I still think it was an awesome idea!

  7. I think it turned out fantastic! I saw above that you were thinking of yellow to add a little something, and that was what I immediately thought of when I saw it. Maybe where the drawer handle is, that little oblong shape, color it a bright yellow on each drawer. Or, leave it as is. It's beautiful!

  8. Haha, the title of this post is exactly why I'm too much of a wimp to do crafts half the time, because I'm worried it will turn out awful!

That does look great though. I'm not personally a fan of the grey, although I can see where Daniel was coming from with the 'neutral colours' argument. I think I'd have just gone for brown, since all our furniture is generally wooden anyway, and if not we could always coordinate the bedding etc with it! That's just my personal taste though, and it does look super.

  9. It looks like a paint swatch! I don't mean that as a condemnation,it's just the thing that I immediately thought of when I saw it.
You should pin it on pinterest with the description: "paint swatch art in your decor" and everyone will pin it onto their "artsy home decor" boards.

  10. I have to say that I love your dresser the way that it is!! I think if you wanted a pop of color, you could add it where the handles and grooves in the drawer are. But I wouldn't take add any other paint to it. Another idea I've seen is to paint the INSIDE of the drawers. Gives you a fun surprise when you open your drawers.

  11. I think it would make a HUGE different to put some feet on it! Just to raise it off the ground a few inches would make it seem lighter. you can get ones that screw on at hardware stores or online

    1. This is SUCH a good idea! I told my husband about it, and now we are doing some research. It's already pretty tall, but if it were raised just a tiny bit, I think it would make all the difference.

  12. It looks so good! I think where you might be thrown off is that the bottom drawer and rim color of the dresser seems to take a much larger jump in shade than between the other colors, making it a more harsh transition in the drawer colors but also between the other drawers and rim. If you took that grey few steps down, it might give it that more naturally sleek gradient look. Either way, I think it looks great and way better than it just being the plain wood!

  13. Bahahaha the gif at the end!
Seriously though, I did the exact same ombre paint job on my dresser this weekend! I think yours is pretty, but if you really wanted to maybe you could add some color with hardware? Like purple or teal drawer pulls or something? I replaced the ugly hardware on mine with wooden knobs I painted darkest to lightest, to contrast with the drawers :)
