Misconceptions about people from Australia [Guest Post]

Did you know, that starting tomorrow, those of us in the northeastern part of the United States are going to be plagued with a snowstorm of epic, potentially historic proportions? Yeah, I'm not super looking forward to that. And in fact, I say we just pretend like it's not even actually happening. To help distract us from our impending doom, let's shift our focus instead to a part of the world that presently has a far friendlier forecast: Australia.

Cue Karrine from Momentary Reality. She's an Australian blogger, and she's here today to tell us all about her native land. Specifically, she wants to correct some of the misguided assumptions people sometimes have about life down under. Here's Karrine:

Hey everyone! My name’s Karrine and I've dropped by today from my blog Momentary Reality to address a few of the misconceptions people have about Australians (and thanks so much to Christy for allowing me to do so!) . I should mention first up that, yes, I am indeed an Aussie and that I have traveled the world enough to have been asked about or had commented on all of the misconceptions listed below. Even just this past Christmas my sister had her American boyfriend come and stay with my family and it was especially interesting to hear his perspective, expectations and notions of what his first Aussie summer would entail.

Ok, onto the misconceptions (as interpreted by me, of course)…

#1 - We all love vegemite.

[Editor's note: If you're unfamiliar, vegemite is a popular yeast-based, vegetable spread]

Ick! I cannot stand vegemite. I do not eat it on my toast every morning. I do not pack it in my luggage to take on overseas trips. I do not crave its (very, very, ridiculously) salty flavour. In fact, I do not think about vegemite at all, because I do not eat it… EVER!

#2 - We ride kangaroos to school.

I don’t even know where to start with this one. Have you seen a picture of an average kangaroo? And how exactly do you propose that thing shall carry my weight!?

Look, here’s the deal. If you come to Australia expecting to see Kangaroos absolutely everywhere, think again. You’ll be hard pressed to find a kangaroo anywhere near Sydney (besides the zoo). However, in the small coastal town I live in (about a 6 hour drive south of Sydney) we do have plenty of Roos out roaming the streets and eating the grass in the backyard. Have I ever touched a kangaroo? No. They are not pets, they are wild animals. They remind me a lot of the deer I saw whilst in America, as we spend most our time just trying to avoid hitting them with our cars. Also, some of us eat Kangaroos. Yes, they are part of our national emblem, but the meat tastes good and is one of the healthiest meats to consume. I don’t eat it often but I do eat it.

#3 - We all live at the beach (and it’s always hot and sunny there).

I am one lucky Aussie who did grow up at the beach and my parents currently live in a great house with a perfect view of the ocean. But, for most of the year, I live in our nation’s capital Canberra (tell me you knew it wasn’t Sydney, please!?!). We live in all different areas here in Oz, coastal, rural, desert and even snow in winter. Australia is so often portrayed as sunshine and bikini weather but we DO get winter. If you’re expecting year round Summer be sure to head to the north of Queensland for year round heat.

#4 - We are all tanned, blonde, Miranda Kerr-esque goddesses.

Now I think about it this misconception is probably more England-based than American. You see, we have these two long running soap operas that Australia is particularly well known for in England. ‘Neighbours’ and particularly ‘Home and Away’ portray Australia as having endless sunshine and there being no need to own a jumper (aka a sweatshirt), as well as suggesting that every female ever born in this country was genetically blessed with an olive complexion, blonde hair and a fit bod. Just like the rest of the world, Australians are all different. Luckily, differences are what make life exciting.

#5 - We say the phrase “Throw a shrimp on the barbie”

Prawns. We call them Prawns. I have never used the word Shrimp in my life, so please don’t ever let me hear you use this phrase in a terrible Aussie accent ever again!

Thanks, Karrine, for spreading the word about these hilariously common misconceptions about people from Australia! To follow Karrine, you can do so HERE.

Q&A | Simple Chronicles of Me

It's Tuesday, folks, and everyone knows that Tuesday is a great day to fall in love with a new blogger. Duh. That being said, I'm so pleased to introduce you to Toyota at Simple Chronicles of Me! She's yet another blogger from the UK, and today she's here on Avoiding Atrophy to talk about the important things of life -- things like inspiration, friendship, and of course, Nutella. Here's Toyota:

1. What inspired you to start Simple Chronicles of Me?

I've always loved writing but what actually inspired Simple Chronicles of Me was being rejected by a boy. It just made me think that life was too short to spend time living for the what could have been and as I had always wanted to write a blog then why shouldn't I so I blundered in blissfully unaware of how much hard work blogging is but I love it!

2. What are some of your favorite things to share with your readers?

I share quite a large range of stuff and sometimes I'm sure people must just think "too much information woman!!!" so I'm not sure if I can pick a favourite but I love sharing book reviews as I love reading

3. What/who inspires you (in life, or as a blogger, or both)?

Mulan, my mumma and Nutella - strong, independent, sassy, delicious (oh wait that's just Nutella)

4. If you had to pick two recent posts that truly represent the Simple Chronicles of Me spirit, which posts would you choose and why?

I'd pick my Organisation Plan post as this really represents what I want my 2015 to be about and hopefully inspires someone else to get organised. I would also pick my post about The Reasons I Love Winter as 1) it includes a picture of me as a cute kid and 2) it reminds me to be less negative!!

5. When you aren't blogging, what might we find you doing?

When I'm not blogging I am generally working (massive workaholic!!) and I'm now starting an Open University degree so that doesn't leave me much time for anything other than sleeping but I also love to read, watch movies, take pictures, drink fruit cider and chat to my besties.

Comments have been disabled for this post, but if you'd like to say hey to Toyota, you can do so HERE.

Mrs. Robbins Sparkles | Q&A

First off, thanks so much to everyone who completed my reader survey! It gave me a great picture of everyone who reads this blog (for instance, I now know that I can drop all illusions that I have any male readers...because I basically do not. Whatever, I don't need those cooties, anyway.) Be on the lookout for some hip happenings on Avoiding Atrophy in the near future which will be very much influenced by the helpful feedback you provided.

But for now, I'm psyched to introduce you to Jennifer, the wonderful voice behind the blog, Mrs. Robbins Sparkles (we're all in love with that name, right?). Jennifer and I had the opportunity to chat recently for a consultation, and it was just an absolute delight. She's brilliant, creative, and just flat out lovely, and her blog reflects that in major ways. Today, she's here to give some A's to my Q's, so read on and then head over to her blog to say hello!

1. What is the story behind Mrs Robbins Sparkles? How did you get your start in the blogging world?

I came up with the name Mrs Robbins Sparkles after a friend texted me that my new name (I got married last year) made her think of Robin Sparkles a la How I Met Your Mother. And with that text Mrs Robbins Sparkles was born. I literally bought the domain name the same afternoon! Mrs Robbins Sparkles has been around since May, but I’ve actually been blogging since 2009. My old blog was much more personal, more like a Xanga page than a blog that people should actually read. I decided to completely start over with Mrs Robbins Sparkles and I'm really glad I did. Sometimes we all need a fresh start!

2. One of the reasons I love your blog is that I get a real sense of your love for pop culture. What are some of your favorite books/tv shows/movies right now?

I do love pop culture, but I think the real reason behind that is my love of a good story. I love getting sucked into a whole other universe and getting to know characters. That’s what makes television more fun for me than movies (with the exception of series like Harry Potter). With movies you get such a small view into that fictional world. With television you get hours and hours to fall for the story and the characters. I think that’s what makes binge watching so appealing. As a college freshman I basically lived and breathed Friends; my roommate and I owned all ten seasons on DVD and it played on a loop in our dorm room. By the end of the year it felt like we were part of the Friends gang! (So really we were binge watching before binge watching was cool.) I have some shows I watch that are currently on the air (Chicago Fire, How to Get Away with Murder, Scandal,Criminal Minds, Modern Family to name a few) but I also like to pick a show and binge watch it all the way through. Right now I’m rewatching Doctor Who, but I’m also working my way through Veronica Mars and House. When I’m not watching television I’m reading or listening to podcasts. I always have several books in progress. I have one or two audiobooks on my iPhone to listen to on commutes (right now it’s the fourth book of the Outlander series and All the Light We Cannot See), I have a couple on my Kindle (Astonish Me and The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up) and I’m also in the middle of the Truth About Style in actual physical book form. As for podcasts, I was obsessed with Serial (it’s all about the story), but I’m also devoted to Gilmore Guys, The Lively Show, History Chicks, Stuff You Missed in History Class, After the Jump, and Stuff Mom Never Told You. (If you’re wondering how in the world I listen to everything, keep in mind it takes me over an hour to drive to and from work every day.) So yeah, I guess I do love pop culture!

3. When you aren't blogging, what hobbies might we find you pursuing?

Obviously I spend lots of time reading and watching television! I don't know if I'd say I had a specific hobby, I go through phases. I did rock climbing for awhile. I've tried yoga, knitting, painting...I guess you could say my hobby is trying new things! But most of the time you can find me hanging out with my husband and our awesome pets, Winchester the puppy and Coco the cat.

4. If you had to pick two recent posts that truly represent the Mrs Robbins Sparkles spirit, which posts would you choose and why?

Hmm, this is tough because I feel like I’m still trying to find my feet on the blog. Perhaps the very first post would be a good place to start? But one of the most popular posts so far is this one on the DIY bed frame my husband and I did. (One of my favorite DIY projects ever!)

5. What/who inspires you (in life, or as a blogger, or both)?

As far as blogging goes, I’m inspired by several bloggers. Elsie and Emma over at A Beautiful Mess, Laura Tremaine of Hollywood Housewife, Anne Bogel of Modern Mrs Darcy, and of course you Miss Christy of Avoiding Atrophy. In life I’m inspired by so many wonderful people. My parents have always been an inspiration, but I also look up to people like Madeleine L’Engle, Audrey Hepburn, JK Rowling, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler. Which is a pretty random group of people when you think about it, but I stand by my choices!

The Lilac Linnet | Q&A

Oh my, this is a good one, friends! Today I have the privilege of introducing you to Llinos from The Lilac Linnet. If you've read her blog, then you already know that she hails from the UK and that she is full of joy, wisdom, and some seriously legit cookie recipes. If you've not read her blog, then today you are in for a treat! Llinos is here today to answer a few of my questions, so sit back and get to know your new best friend.

1. What is the story behind The Lilac Linnet? How did you get your start in the blogging world?

I simply thought that blogging looked like a lot of fun and a great way to create a writing practice. I wanted somewhere to document my projects and interests and to make new friends in the blogging community. I am also very candid about my experiences of cancer and depression, in order to raise awareness of these issues. I love every minute of blogging! My name is Welsh for 'linnet', so coupled with my favourite colour, you have my blog name.

2. Tell me all about Cardiff! I'd love to know what makes your city special.

I love living in Cardiff, it's definitely one of the most vibrant cities in the UK. I love exploring the variety of shops and eateries, the proud history and how close we are to nature and the mountains. It's a great place to sample the unique Welsh culture!

3. What/who inspires you (in life, or as a blogger, or both)

As a blogger I am inspired by lifestyle bloggers, vloggers and BookTubers. I always feel so motivated after watching videos or reading blogs and it makes me keen to get writing for my own! In life I am inspired by authors who bring their wonderful stories to life, women like Malala and celebrities like Emma Watson who support important causes.

4. If you had to pick two recent posts that truly represent the Lilac Linnet spirit, which posts would you choose and why?

This post is what I hope to achieve with my blog this year, and it makes me really excited to read back over it. It's definitely a good time to become a reader, I can promise that lots of fun is on the way!

This post explains why I support the #TakeBackWhatsYours campaign, by reclaiming my self assurance from the crippling anxiety which has consumed me recently. It's a really empowering mission and demonstrates the power of blogging.

5. When you aren't blogging, what hobbies might we find you pursuing?

I have lots of hobbies; I believe in pursuing what you love. I'll be going for a run, writing my novel, crocheting a blanket or reading a history book!

Comments have been disabled for this post, but go say hey to Llinos HERE.

Hey Hollywood | Q&A

Special treat, guys! Holly from Hey Hollywood is on the blog today answering some of my crazy questions. If you've yet to meet Holly through her wonderful blog, allow me to just tell you that this girl is positively awesome. I've been sponsoring her this last month, and she has been so great about making me feel like an absolute rock star (seriously, if you are a blogger, go snatch up one of her sponsor spots). She's also a woman of many talents and interests with a fiery love for the state of Ohio. Here she is:

1. I'm such a fan of your blog, Hey Hollywood! What inspired you to start it?

Ever since I can remember, I have loved to write. I would write fictional stories all the time as a child. I was a journalism major in college. But jobs tell you what to write about, and I wanted a creative outlet to write freely. So I started blogging seven years ago, and after several blogs and name changes and learning more about the whole blogging scene, Hey, Hollywood was born. It’s definitely a work in progress - me still figuring out my writing style and what I want for this blog; it’s ebbed and flowed - but it’s been a good outlet for me. It’s allowed me to connect with other bloggers and make new friends. Honestly, I didn’t know that anyone would ever read it, but now that they do, I feel obligated to always make it better. To keep growing as a writer, and that is a good thing.

2. What are some things you love about living in the great state of Ohio?

Here are my top 5 things that I love about living in Ohio:

1. Football season. I love football. I am a Buckeye and Cleveland fan, and we are the most loyal fans. We live for game days. Living in Columbus, Buckeye Saturdays are a great time to gather with friends and tailgate - on campus or at home. And I know that the Cleveland Browns get a bad rap, but the fans never lose hope. These teams keep fans coming back week after week - win or lose.

2. All four seasons. Sure, Ohioans complain about how finicky the weather can be one day to the next, but it’s nice to experience each season every year. The fall is my favorite!

3. There’s so much to do. Living in Columbus, there is always something going on - concerts, sporting events, charity events, new restaurant and store openings, galleries and museums, and so much more. Ohio also has wineries, and beautiful places to visit - Hocking Hills, Lake Erie islands, Amish Country, Deer Creek State Park, and more - and vibrant cities to explore like Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati. And we have the best amusement park, Cedar Point, and best zoo, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, in the country!

4. It’s constantly growing. Columbus and Ohio attract a lot of companies and businesses, making it a great place for new opportunities as a professional.

5. The people. I’ve met some amazing people, doing amazing things. Sure, there are always going to be assholes, but people are pretty cool here. Columbus is quite diverse as well, which also makes things interesting. I also love that when I travel, you can always count on running into someone from Ohio. Or hearing someone yell out, “O-H!” To which several people always respond, “I-O!"

3. What/who inspires you (in life, or as a blogger, or both)?

As a blogger, I’m inspired by Meagan at Because of Jackie. I love her writing style - she really engages her readers. I love that she dabbles in many topics - fashion, motherhood, life, what inspires her - and she is real. She shares her personal struggles and triumphs, she lets you into her life and makes you think. She is definitely the first blog I read every day.

In life, I am inspired by so many things. It’s not just people, but things and situations. It could be something someone says, it could be something beautiful I see, it could be a feeling - I look for inspiration everywhere. I keep an open mind so that I am constantly observing my surroundings as objectively as I can. I love learning new things - about people and about life. It keeps me pushing myself, and constantly learning and growing and moving forward.

4. If you had to pick two recent posts that truly represent the Hey Hollywood spirit, which posts would you choose and why?

First, I’d choose this post: 30 Facts About Me
There are few posts we bloggers love more than a “facts” post. I love learning about others through these types of posts, so I think this is a good post through which people can get to know me.

Second, I’d choose this post: My favorite quote
What I think this post says about me is that I work hard, play hard and I don’t quit. I like to push myself to always better, to learn more and to do more. It also says that I am up for trying new things and simply enjoying life.

5. When you aren't blogging, what hobbies might we find you pursuing?

When I’m not blogging, I am either coaching high school cheerleading, working out, eating, drinking wine, spending time with my family and friends, pinning my next DIY project or home decorating venture, or eating. Yes, eating is in there twice. I love food. And wine.

Guest Post: 16 New Year's Eve Traditions | Tragic Tales and Manicured Nails

I think that "JAZZED" is the best way to describe how I am feeling right now. Today I have the distinct privilege of introducing you to Caroline from Tragic Tales and Manicured Nails. She and I recently had the opportunity to connect for a consultation, and let me tell you, this woman is as brilliant as she is hilarious. Today she is taking over my blog to share some yearly New Year's Eve traditions (some intentional and some incidental). Can you relate with any of these?

Here's Caroline:

HELLO Avoiding Atrophy readers! Caroline here from Tragic Tales and Manicured Nails. I’m popping in to taking over my girl Christy’s space to share some New Years Eve traditions I have. Christy had asked me if I had any and, at first, I thought that I didn’t. Upon further reflection, I realized that I essentially do the same thing every NYE.

So, here I am outlining my 16 foolproof, consistent traditions that I follow each year. Please feel free to incorporate any of these into your yearly routine.

1. I set high expectations.

I’m sorry, but you can’t tell me that you watched High School Musical and didn’t envision finding the Troy to your Gabriella at a ski resort on New Year’s Eve. We will sing karaoke at a professional-level only to exchange numbers (and photos stored to the number, of course) and later find ourselves at the same school only to FALL IN LOVE! I mean, these things HAPPEN, okay? I always go into the night with a minimum of 6 karaoke songs memorized for this very reason. Songs memorized must also vary in genre so I’m prepared for any type of singing partner. Country boy? Rapper? Alternative rock guy with long hair and questionable life decisions? I’m ready to harmonize.

2. I don’t have plans.

More often than not, I forget it’s coming. It sneaks up on me like a tiger while I’m still catching my breath from Christmas. I mean, I’m currently still over-thinking things I did in 2010, so a-whole-nother year for me to accidentally ask non-pregnant women if they’re pregnant over produce in grocery stores is just NOT what I need right now.

3. I spend New Year’s Eve Eve looking for things to do on New Year’s Eve.

I text my friends and they have no plans either, so we debate our options. Club? Too expensive. Party bus? Too cramped. Chipotle? Closes at 11. I’m usually visiting home for New Years so we don’t even have a house to go to that isn’t owned by a parent who ratted me out in high school for speeding through their neighborhood (I had places to be in high school. I mean, sometimes I had to go to Target and Walgreens in the same afternoon.) We settle on one of the parent’s basement where we will have access to a TV so we can watch the ball drop and cheers and make out and whatever.

4. I throw on anything and everything I own with sequins, regardless of the basement venue.

All shapes, sizes, quantity, color; I do not discriminate. I look incredible and will indeed blind people whenever I walk by a light. Beauty is pain, for everyone around me.

5. I purchase one bottle of champagne.

Sometimes two. Sometimes thirteen.

6. I arrive and scope out the situation.

Obvious question that needs to be answered immediately: Who will be my New Year’s kiss? My options are slim because it seems like everyone already pre-decided their New Years kiss and has brought them along. Natasha brought her boyfriend, Jessica brought her current fling, and Makenzie brought her brother. Ugh.

7. We stare at each other.

Should we play a game? Let’s play a game.

8. 95% of the champagne is in my belly, King’s Cup is over, and I moved on to the part of the night where I tell everybody how much I love them.

This is essential and cannot be skipped.

9. I check the clock to find that it’s 11:47pm.

Midnight is approaching. I scramble. Does anyone feel like they’re about to break up!? I make a great rebound. I need to find someone to kiss and I need to do it fast.

10. I realize that this family has a cat.

Beggars can’t be choosers. I approach the cat to make small talk before our big moment and their female dog comes out of nowhere and barks at me to get away from her NYE kiss. Seriously!? What a real bitch.

11. Ryan Seacrest tells me it’s time to start counting down.

12. I tell Ryan Seacrest to LAY OFF.

13. The girls start to dab their lip gloss. They guys start to pop in mints.

They’re preparing. They know what’s coming. I do, too. I swiftly steal someone’s seat on the recliner as they stand up to kiss. They will fall in love; I will fall asleep. ABC Family has probably already turned into 700 Club which means it's way past my bedtime.

14. 7 seconds until midnight.

15. Anyone want to karaoke?

16. Midnight comes.

It’s officially the New Year and I am kiss-less. Meanwhile, the dog and cat have already moved to the bedroom.

Once we clear this midnight hump, I realize that Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens ended up breaking up anyway. Also, I can’t sing. Also, there’s no one I actually wanted to kiss. Also, I’m wearing a sequin dress in a basement.

Seriously, why do we put so much pressure on ourselves on New Years? It is so silly and yet it happens every year. It’s like we are all programmed to believe that New Year’s Eve must be some extravagant night, so we spend too much on cover charges and spray twice as much perfume as usual. This year? I’m doing it differently. I’m changing my perspective. I’m switching it up. 2015 will be welcomed in sweat pants.

But yes, they will be sequined.

Life as a Production Assistant | Under the Ash Tree

Friends, I'm psyched to introduce you to Ashley from Under the Ash Tree! She and I met up recently for a blog consultation at a coffee shop right here in Brooklyn, and let me tell you, we had a blast and a half. Actually, more like a blast and a whole. It was pretty much a mega blast.

Not only are Ashley and I neighbors, but we also have quite a few things in common. For instance, she works as a production assistant (or a PA, if you're into acronyms), which is the very same job title I held a while back. I asked her today to come on this here blog and divulge what it's like to work as a PA here in NYC. Check her out. She's boss.

---------------------------------------------

Hey Avoiding Atrophy readers! I’m Ashley and I write over at Under The Ash Tree. I'm so excited today to tell you a little bit about my life. I'm a Brooklyn resident, I've lived here for six years, and I am a production assistant.

UnderTheAshTree_AshleyHufford_NHL_HertiageClassic

For those who don’t know, a production assistant, or “PA,” is essentially the backbone to any major television or movie production. PAs are hired to do everything and anything, from running to get coffee, to setting up lights, to managing extras or mic’ing up talent. Some of my friends who also work in the industry have done things like walking an “A-list” celebrity’s dog or working on the field at the Superbowl. I’ve worked at places like Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, where I had to pick out a tie for Steve Martin, and the Colbert Report, where I had to find a pirate costume for a taxidermic squirrel and go to Washington DC to work The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear.

UnderTheAshTree_AshleyHufford_ColbertReport_Ralley

It’s a challenging job with long hours, but in New York where there is so much production work going on, you can constantly find jobs on a variety of projects, so it can be very exciting! My situation is a little different than a traditional PA as I have a full-time job with benefits, paid vacation and personal days. Full-time PA jobs are fairly uncommon, as most productions are freelance, but I work on a television show called NHL Live, a two-hour daily pre-game show on NHL Network, the National Hockey League’s TV Channel. I’ve worked here since after the NHL lockout in February 2011 and it’s been a busy and interesting ride. Hockey is a seasonal sport, but our “production season” runs from September, the start of the teams' training camps, all the way through “Free Agency Day” on July 1st. During the season, I work 50 to 70 hours per week and 5 to 7 days a week which is exhausting, but also a lot of fun. I get to go cover all the major hockey events with the show, like the Winter Classic, the All-Star Game and the Stanley Cup Finals, which is overwhelming yet wonderful to say the least.

UnderTheAshTree_AshleyHufford_StanleyCupFinals

My days vary depending on the time of year and whether or not I am on the road for work. But on a normal weekday during the season, my day is fairly straight forward. I arrive at 9am, check my email and will usually have a list of things I can start working on given to me by the producers. I went to New York University for Video Editing so I am often asked to use that skill by preparing B-rolls, which are essentially highlights from the previous night’s games.

  UnderTheAshTree_AshleyHufford_WinterClassic

Everyday at 10:30 we have a morning meeting, where the crew, five PA’s, a producer, a director and a graphics coordinator discuss the rundown of what is going to happen that day. We find out what guests we'll have on the show, what team reports there are, or which NHL players had a good night the previous evening. We get to present ideas for segments, and go over important events happening in the next few weeks. After the meeting, I have a list of what to work on and then I get going on those items until 2pm, when I head into the control room. In the Control Room, I run a machine called the “GrassValley Stratus,” where I am in charge of making sure all the footage the producers want for the show has been edited by the editors. It’s kind of complicated, but the way I can explain it is this: let’s say our talent–the hosts of the show–are talking about Sidney Crosby, arguably the best player in the NHL. I would cue up video of Crosby scoring goals, and then would play that on TV while the hosts talk about so the viewers can see examples of how good of a player he is. Here is an example of an NHL Live montage I edited that opened the block on former player Mark Messier :

Most people who are production assistants use the skills they learn to move up in the production world. One day, I would love to be a producer on a live television show, but I am still a few years and few levels away from that right now. However I'm still pretty happy with my job and where I am at. Yes, I wish I had more free time, but the benefits far outweigh the exhaustion!

Thanks Christy for letting me take over your blog today! If you want to connect with me or ask me any more questions, check out my "professional website" or my twitter page!

Q&A with Stevie Storck

Happy Saturday, friends! Today I'd like you to meet Stevie Storck of Stevie Storck Design Co.! She's a designer from Lancaster, PA with an impeccable sense of style, a beautiful blog, and an Etsy shop called Young Tradition Studio that you should definitely go check out after reading this post (you hear me? AFTER!). She's on the blog today answering some questions about life, design, and inspiration. Check her out!

1. I love people who make big moves to follow their passions. Can you tell me a bit about what led you to launch Stevie Storck Design Co?

It's been an interesting journey! I started blogging in 2011 as an interior design student who was profiling her own DIY projects for her first apartment (under the name Lace & Paper Flowers). As I was creating presentations for my school projects and trying to make my blog look nice, I slowly began teaching myself graphic design. A few months before my college graduation, I started selling custom printable stationery designs through the Etsy platform as Stevie Greek Design! That fall, I married my high school sweetheart (yay!) and started debating the whole name issue. Should I take my husband's name? Should I keep my maiden name professionally? (This was a joke because as a recent college graduate, I barely even had a "career").

Nevertheless, this big life change led to some deep thinking on the identity I wanted to create for myself, personally and professionally. Over the next year, I really analyzed my goals and what I wanted my blog and business to become. In late summer 2014, I launched Stevie Storck Design Co.! To me, it just didn't feel right to draw a hard line between "personal" and "professional". So in addition to my posts about interior design, decorating and DIY projects, I continue to share bits and pieces from my life. As a designer, I want to get to know my clients as their true selves and I want my clients and readers to know me in this same way!

2. In your Etsy shop, Young Tradition Studio, you sell unique, customizable stationary. What has been your favorite part about distributing your designs through Etsy?

My favorite part has definitely been sharing in the joy and excitement of my customer's milestones and celebrations, like getting married or having a new baby. I love it when I really get to collaborate with a client, to create something custom and unique to their event.

3. When you are not designing/writing posts for your site, what do you enjoy doing?

I work full-time as a Design Consultant at INTER!ORS in Lancaster, PA, which I really enjoy but I am also a woman of many hobbies! In addition to the decorating, graphic design and crafting projects I share on my blog, I enjoy singing Choral music, playing the mandolin, trying new recipes, spending time on my family's farm, hanging out with my two adorable nieces and traveling around the country to visit friends.

4. What are two posts that you've written recently which you feel are representative of your brand?

1. Winter Style | Seasonal Color & Decor Inspiration

2. Fall Style | 7 Tips For DIY Wreath Making

5. What/who inspires you?

I used to watch a lot of HGTV, but not having cable in college really weaned me off of that. I still love catching episodes of Fixer Upper with Chip & Joanna Gaines (who may or may not be my role models in life) but mostly I find inspiration from other bloggers and Pinterest! Some of my favorite bloggers are Merrick from Merrick's Art, Emily from Jones Design Company, and Elsie and Emma of A Beautiful Mess. Instagram is also one of my favorite ways to follow designers and bloggers that I admire.

Week of YES Update & Some Exciting News!

If you read yesterday's post, you know that right now I am in the midst of my Week of Yes! Just a refresher: this means that I am spending the week saying "yes" to all sorts of things that come my way: invitations, opportunities, my own insane to-do list, and collaborations with awesome creatives. For the record, since I started this experiment, this Liz Lemonism is all I can think about:

This week has gotten off to a killer start. I think all of the downtime I had in my Week of No really got me amped up to make things happen this week. It's almost 8 PM, and I have hardly stopped to breathe since I began my day at 8 AM (okay, I ate two meals and used the bathroom, but you get the idea...don't be gross).

The to-do list I created is extensive, but I really wanted it to be something that would challenge me. It includes items such as comment on 100 blogs, send 50 emails to potential sponsors, and right every wrong in all humankind. These are tall orders, but I think I'm up for it.

When I was making it, my husband asked me what would happen if I didn't complete my list, and I said that it wouldn't be a problem because I will complete it, and he said, "Yeah, but say you don't. What then?" and I relented and said that I would move to the woods. So basically, it's a finish-this-list-or-move-to-the-woods type of situation.

That being said, there are some things happening this week on this here blog that I would like to bring to your attention. Ehem...

1. I've updated my Sponsor Page!

If you are a blogger/writer/some kind of creative freelancey type person, you are going to want to check out the updates I've made to my sponsor page! Like, seriously, it's more than just that pretty picture I made of me standing in front of a mural of kitties.

I've made some changes to my sponsor options, and I also ADDED a consultation option! If you're on the fence about sponsoring, know this: in my blogging journey, my biggest moments of growth have come whenever I've collaborated with other likeminded creatives. Blog sponsorship is a great way to broaden your audience and get your name/face/wonderful words out there. So let's work together!

2. For this week only, sponsor spots are on mega sale!

Go scoop one up, and make sure to enter the code "SHESAIDYES" at checkout!

3. A linkup is coming!

I received a few very sweet messages today from folks who are excited by the idea of A Week of No | A Week of Yes. Thanks for that, guys, and trust me, it gives me great relief to know that I am not the only one who could use a refresher on what it means to set boundaries.

Since it seems to be striking a chord with some of us, why don't we all share our experiences? When I'm done with my Week of Yes, I'll create a post debriefing some of my thoughts, and at the end of that, I'll include a place for you to linkup a post of your own. Here's what you'll need to do:

Option 1: Start the experiment for yourself this week (you can join me in living in the spirit of YES or you can have a NO Week instead), and write about your experience after the fact
Option 2: Simply write a post detailing a time in life when you said "yes" or "no" to something significant.

I'll post the linkup next Tuesday, so in the meantime, start prepping your posts!

Besides all of that, stay tuned for more posts this week, ones that are slightly less self-promotional than this one was.

And hey, just a quick reminder for those of you who are thinking about making this a Week of Yes or for those of you who just go-go-go all day long regardless because you're awesome: don't forget to stop. For me, I've decided to be incredibly intentional this week to devoting 30 minutes of each day to reading/meditating on Scripture. It's a critical part of my day. Doing this reminds me that my strivings are not all about myself and that there is something bigger and better about my life than any stress that might come my way.

That being said, how do you slow down when things are crazy?

Oh and P.S. Don't be afraid to reach out to me in the midst of my Week of Yes! I need more things to say "yes" to anyway. Seriously, try me.

Cadillacin' & Not Before My Tea

I spent many summers of my life working at a camp in Texas, and in the kitchen of this facility worked a man named Chris. Chris is the kind of guy who leaps into your day, tells you stories that you're not quite sure you believe, and makes you laugh so easily that you forget to breathe. Having an in with Chris meant he'd sneak you extra bread in the lunch line, stash away the occasional brownie for you, and even call you "Lil Sis" (or "Cuz", if you were a man).

Chris would always playfully accuse me of "Cadillacin'" -- a word that to him meant "slacking". It's a word I loved so much that I started incorporating it into my own language only to find that no one ever knew what I was talking about. Urban Dictionary has three different definitions for "cadillacin'" two of which involve laziness and one which involves being incapacitated from smoking too much weed.

Soooo...when I say I've been cadillacin' when it comes to blogging this week, please note that I mean the lazy kind.

A woman cadillacin' in a Cadillac...with oranges (Via)

Anyway, yes, I've been full-on cadillacin' blog-wise, but that's only because life-wise things have been pretty frenetic. I can't wait to share some of the goodness that's been happening over in my neck of the woods, but while all of that stuff is totally unwritten, I'd love to introduce you to a blogger who is just the absolute opposite of Cadillacin'. She's one of my sponsors this month, so check her out, and also feel free to start incorporating your new favorite word into everyday conversation.

I'm really excited about this one, guys. Today I am pleased to introduce you to Nicole who blogs over at Not Before My Tea!

Blog//Facebook//Twitter//Instagram//Bloglovin

If you're a fun person who likes other fun people who do fun things, you'll probably want to head on over to Not Before My Tea right about now. Nicole is a Chicago girl with a love of running and all things hilarious.

Okay, so here's how I knew I was going to fall in love with this blog -- At the bottom of her page, you can see all of the labels she uses to tag her posts. The ones with the most usage are displayed larger, and  guys, Nicole's three most-used tags are...blog reader appreciation, humor, and BRUNCH!

There is nothing I love more than a woman with a good sense of humor who appreciates her readers & a good weekend brunch! These are all things to which I can say yes.

So yes, her passions are in the right place, but her posts are also just a blast and a half to read. She has that writing voice that makes you want to be brunch buddies (and like, honestly, I don't think she'd object to that). Here are just a few of my favorite posts from Nicole:

25 Things That Excite an Excitable Young Adult
That Time We Won $400
Four Running Things Even Runners Can't Explain
I Want to Be On GOMI

And by the way, if you're a blogger, Nicole also does blog design, so if you're scrolling around Not Before My Tea thinking "ummm this is the cutest, cleanest blog layout I've seen lately" (that's what I think anyway), you may want to hit her up.

Head on over to Not Before My Tea, read each and everyone one of her posts, and tell her Christy said hey!

The Shellhammer

Quick reminder: The 10 Things I Like About Myself Link-up is still very much active!

The woman I am about to introduce you to is not only one of my most recent sponsors, but she is also one of my greatest joys since moving to New York City. This is my dear, sweet, fantastic, funny, classy, and gorgeous friend, Alex. She is a gem in-person, but guys, you've seriously got to check out her blog, The Shellhammer. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's full of Alex's beautiful insights, unique photographs of life in New York City, wedding inspiration (she's getting married this summer!), and just so much joy. For a glimpse of what she does best, be sure to see her contribution for yesterday's link-up.

Today, she's answering some questions about her life as a blogger, so check it out, fall in love, and then head on over to The Shellhammer and tell her I said hey!

1. Describe the focus of The Shellhammer as well as what got you interested in blogging in the first place.

Words constantly present themselves to me and have ever since I can remember. Not always well, not always eloquently, but they are there dying to be written down in some capacity. In college, I started reading a select few blogs, in between my “studies”. I would write in random journals that you will now find peppered throughout my apartment. Once I moved to New York and was starting to feel comfortable, I began reading many blogs and idea generation just came to me. I was far away from home, I was loving my job and the city and I wanted to tell my mom about it. So The Shellhammer was born. “Silly talk,” which is the sub-title, comes from my favorite childhood book that my mom used to read to us called Rain Makes Applesauce, which is just a bunch of silly talk. And it’s grown, organically and beautifully. It’s been a place of comfort for me to know that I can always write to my readers and they will listen in their way. My intentions are to keep it light and focus on things I love: New York, happiness, weddings, eating. It’s a bit vague but no one has just one interest. And as you’ll see below, this world inspires me.

2. As a lover of NYC, what would you say draws you to this unique city?

A slight confession: New York was never somewhere I wanted to live. I was (and still am) a Chicago girl at heart (or, as it is the dead of winter, a west coast girl). But when I met Josh, he already had a job lined up here after graduation. After two years of dating distance, it only made sense for me to give myself to New York. It wasn’t immediate, but the city began to grow on me. All of the nooks and crannies that reveal themselves over time are enchanting. There is always something new to see, some exotic food to eat, someone new to learn about. The city is in a constant state of changing and rebuilding so it never gets old. Now I feel like the city is my best friend – it teaches me more and more about the type of person I am and the type of person I want to be. It pushes me, annoys me and allows me to grow to the point where I call this place home.

3. You have a few lovely posts on planning your wedding. How is that going for you?

Planning your own wedding is far more delicate than most people think. Whether you are eloping at city hall or throwing a true bash, there are certain aspects each couple wants to portray on that day. It is the culmination of who you are and where you will be headed for the rest of your life. To me, the marriage itself should be the main focus because that is pure beauty bundled up in a few vows. It makes me nervous and excited to fully immerse myself into life with Josh. Because this is the way we both feel, we are holding a private ceremony in Big Sur, California to dive in with our immediate families. But, because this is such a huge leap in our lives, it would not be complete with a little (or big) celebration where we grew up in Ohio. So, of course, a bash will be thrown so we can let loose and celebrate. We are excited to have all of the people who have impacted us in one place to have an amazing night and I am trying my best to release the pressure of it being perfect. But every bride feels that – so just know I want you to be having a good time.

4. What are two posts you've written recently that you are particularly excited about?

I write a lot about New York and different places and pictures it has to offer but my favorite series comes almost every Monday to start the week in a good mood. Good Mood Monday represents who I am better than any other post. It’s filled with small adventures and moments that continue the joy in my heart and I love sharing that with people. I also love posting about weddings. As an event planner (corporate), I have always found myself gravitating around weddings and how beautifully unique each one is. I love highlighting different ideas and inspiration on the blog. (Most Wednesdays!)

5. What/who inspires you?

Gosh, I pull inspiration from everywhere and I truly believe that everyone should – a conversation with a friend, a walk down 10th Street, a dramatic experience. I personally feel the most creative when I am part of nature. Somehow being placed in the beauty of natural, Godly creation for spurts of time calms me so my mind can open. I love taking short trips out of the city to open that part of me. I pull from the city as well. Manmade creations are just as majestic sometimes, and truly give me a sense of belonging and building. It’s inspiring what this city can do for people. Speaking of people, I’m constantly inspired by them as well. By both new cultures and asking questions of those I already know. My siblings and parents who I watch immerse themselves in their passions. Josh, my fiancĂ©, who works harder than anyone I have ever met. My dear friends who each have these unique abilities to bring out the best in those around them. And strangers, who write blogs and books and anecdotes that make me laugh and cry.

Something Winnderful: Love it Forward

After a quick weekend to Texas (more on that later), I'm back in Brooklyn with a stomach full of chips and queso, feeling sleepy and slightly disoriented. Thankfully, Katie from Something Winnderful is taking over the blog today with a far more coherent/entertaining post than I could ever hope to deliver at the moment (phew!). She's got some exciting news about a linkup she's hosting, so read on, and then bounce on over to her blog because it's full of pictures of her dog and some seriously wonderful (or, rather, WINNderful) posts. I mean it. You're going to love this girl.

Oh, and obviously, bloggers, link it up!

-----------------------------------------------------

Hey there all you Avoiding Atrophy readers! I'm Katie from Something Winnderful and I'm taking over the blog today! I've been hanging out on the sidebar for awhile and I'm excited to share a post with you all! Today I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you all about Love It Forward. It is a linkup I will be hosting twice a month along with Chasing Happy and As Always, Kara. But it's much more than just a linkup. It's a whole idea that each one of us can in some way spread more love into the world. We are working to create a community of bloggers (and anyone else) dedicated to sharing the love and inspiring others to do the same. So what exactly does that mean? We are encouraging everyone to do some sort of loving act every two weeks (or more!) and then share it in a post. YOU have the ability to brighten someone's day, whether it be from sharing a smile or paying for their food. The opportunities are endless. We want to encourage you to be creative and help inspire others to take action. Not sure how to share some love? Keep reading for some ideas.

Love it forward-a linkup committed to sharing the love

TO YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER

  • Do their least favorite chore for them.
  • Make the 52 weeks of dates craft.
  • Leave love notes in places they will be found, such as coat and pants pockets.
  • Fill their car up with gas.
  • Watch whatever movie or tv show they want to watch....and don't complain.

TO YOUR FAMILY

  • Cook them dinner. Your parents spent 18 years making sure you didn't starve, might as well show some appreciation.
  • Treat them to something nice that they would never buy for themselves.
  • Send them a letter. Who doesn't want to get mail that isn't a bill?
  • Say thank you and tell them you love them. Your parents and sibling(s) dealt with you from the day you were born, I'm sure it wasn't always rainbows and butterflies. Make sure they know how much they mean to you.

TO YOUR FRIENDS

  • Send them a letter. Again, who doesn't like getting mail?
  • Baby sit their kids. I don't have children yet, but I understand the importance of getting away from them sometimes.
  • Bake them some treats.
  • Don't judge or criticize. It becomes easy to give our opinions to our friends, regardless of how positive or negative those opinions may be. Remember to take it easy on them during the times you think they are acting a little crazy.
  • Send them a box subscription to try. Birchbox? Stitch fix? I don't really know what those are, but they exist and people like them.

TO STRANGERS

  • Pay for the person's meal in the car behind you in the drive through. A person did this for me once and it was so wonderful.
  • Even better, leave a gift card at the register of a store and have the cashier use it on customers until it runs out.
  • Leave several Operation Beautiful notes in the dressing rooms at the mall.
  • Feed the parking meter for the person after you when you leave.

TO YOURSELF

  • Buy yourself some earrings from Forever 21. They'll be cute and less than $4.
  • Have a night to yourself. Send your man on a night out with the bros and stay in and pamper yourself.
  • Start a gratitude journal. It's harder to be negative when you take the time to list all the positives you have in your life.
  • Meditate. It doesn't have to be sitting criss cross apple sauce humming kumbaya. Just take a few minutes to be comfortable and enjoy the silence. Don't think about what you should be doing and solely focus on your breathing and relaxing your muscles.
  • Don't be so hard on yourself. We are our own worst critics, make sure you give yourself a break every now and then.
There are so many ways to spread some love into the world. It can be creative or simple, elaborate or straight forward, time consuming or only take a second. There's no reason to not spread a little love. If you still need help, we even have a Pinterest board to help inspire you with ideas. Be sure to visit the Love It Forward page to get details on how to participate. Not only is it an effort to spread love from person to person, but also blogger to blogger. We want to keep the love going and create a community of positivity and inspiration.

How will you love it forward?

Insert Classy Here

Guys, I am really excited about today's Q&A with Steph from Insert Classy Here. I think you're going to love this girl. Steph is a woman living a hop-skip-and-a-jump away from me in a wondrous place called New Jersey. Her blog is hilarious, and I just love how she just keeps it super real. She's on Avoiding Atrophy today answering some questions, but make sure to go visit her afterwards and tell her I said hey!

1.  I love the name "Insert Classy Here"!  Can you elaborate on why you chose it as well as what it might imply about your blog?

While doing this whole growing up thing, the word classy has always been a word I want people to describe me as. When I started blogging, I figured it might be easiest just to include it in the title and magically I would be super classy. Get it? Insert classy here? Well, it's not that easy. I wear sweatpants, eat pizza rolls and I don't really understand the difference between a red wine glass and a white wine glass (I just like big glasses.) I write about my life and the things that I'm figuring out on my lifelong journey to become a little more classy.

2.  You're currently an east coaster and a lover of NYC.  What do you love about living here (or nearby, rather)?

I am from St. Paul, Minnesota and spent my entire life living in the Midwest. I visited Boston for my first time about 9 years ago and knew I belonged on the east coast. I love the road trip options here. We just went to Smuggler's Notch, VT for the weekend to ski. How cool that you don't have to drive 14 hours to get anywhere cool?  I love the food, the speed of life, the food, the energy, the food and the people. I live in Jersey right across from Manhattan and every day I fall in love with that beautiful skyline all over again. Lastly, I love that in the dead middle of winter, I am required by law to have someone else pump my gas while I stay in my warm car. God bless Jersey.

3.  Besides blogging, what is one of your favorite ways to spend your time?

I'm an explorer - like Lewis & Clark style. It can be getting lost in the city and finding a new neighborhood or hiking a brand new trail or road-tripping to a little town that we read about in some travel magazine - I love it all.

4.  What are two post you've written recently that you particularly enjoy?

The Perception of Me is a different kind of "about me" post. I also came up with My Blogging Wishlist and admitted that social media makes me feel super awkward and awesome at the same time.

5.  What/who inspires you in life?

Wow, this is tough. I think it's difficult to answer because there isn't one thing or person that really sticks out to me. I walk away from most experiences feeling inspired to better myself, work harder, get healthier and be kind to others. I'm inspired by people who work their tails off and still have fun in life. I'm inspired by people who aren't afraid to fall down sometimes. You just have to observe and be aware of your surroundings and you can find inspiration all over the place.

Galentine's Day

If you're a fan of the show, Parks and Recreation (which, like, who isn't?), then you know that GALentine's Day is just around the corner. It's a holiday invented by Leslie Knope, played by the always-brilliant Amy Poehler, which celebrates the friendship of gals. Here's the breakdown:

Via

While I'm sad to say that it is not yet recognized as a national holiday, I'm definitely holding out hope for the future of Galentine's. Today I celebrated this sacred day a bit early with some of my favorite women in all of New York City. Here are their faces:

My face is also in this one.

We enjoyed a truly scrumptious brunch from the good people at Boulton & Watt, and we talked about the French language, cheap manicures, and some of our life's greatest ambitions. It was wonderful, something I've been looking forward to all week, and in honor of this gathering, I made my lady friends some crafts (I crafted!).

True story: I had planned on stopping at a drug store on the way to buy a bunch of candy to put in these jars, but as always I was running late, so I just told them to fill them with their hopes & dreams. Thankfully, they were good sports about it.

Having a strong female community is literally one of my favorite things about being a person, and I am so glad to have had an opportunity to celebrate these lovelies. My life has been powerfully impacted by the encouragement of women, so to my friends all over the world of the female variety who have dazzled me with your friendship --

Happy Galentine's!

Speaking of great gals, I'm excited to introduce you to Ashley who blogs over at Mint Sparkles!

First off, it should be noted that when I visit Ashley's blog, I just immediately get happy. Seriously, go there now because it has to be one of the most cheerful blog layouts ever! I'm a sucker for bright colors and sparkly goodness, so her aesthetic is right up my ally.

What I love about Ashley is that she has an eclectic combination of interests. She writes on a seriously impressive array of topics, but one of my favorites is her series called "Student Sessions". She's currently a student now, and she offers some awesome insights into how to make the most of your college experience. I definitely wish I could have had someone like this girl guiding me through college life (and on that note, I also wish I had a time machine to take me back to those good old days because, guys, college is awesome. Ashley, if you're reading this, stay in school forever.)

Another series you shouldn't miss on Mint Sparkles is "Techie Tuesdays" where Ashley introduces you to all of her favorite apps & gadgets while also providing some much-needed tech tips and tricks. If you're trying to decide which iPhone photo editing app to use, you should probably check out this post. If you want to know when the cheapest time to buy a flat screen TV would be, Ashley's got you covered with this post. Basically, anything tech-related -- this girl is writing about it in a super fun way.

So seriously, if you're looking for a blog written by someone fun, smart, and down to earth (Ashley loves spending time watching instant Netflix and shopping in the dollar-section at Target...just. like. YOU!), do yourself a favor and hop on over to Mint Sparkles now. Tell her Christy sent you!
